People-Watching for Style

What is people watching?

noun: people-watching; noun: peoplewatching; the action or practice of spending time idly observing people in a public place (oxford languages).

Imagine this- Sitting in a café with a coffee in hand, the world feels like a movie unfolding before your eyes. There’s the frantic mom weaving through the crowd to grab her kids from school and the guy checking his watch for the third time, clearly waiting for that perpetually late colleague. A group of teenagers bursts out of school, looking like they’ve survived a battlefield, but you can almost hear the sigh of relief as freedom awaits. Meanwhile, some are casually strolling, as if they’ve all the time in the world, while others dash to make it to the grocery store before the door slams shut. Then there’s that one person sprinting like the metro is about to leave for another galaxy. And there you are, cozy with your coffee, taking it all in, amused at how life moves at such different paces and oddly entertained by the everyday chaos. It’s the perfect mix of calm and crazy, a slice of life that makes people-watching in Paris an oddly comforting pastime.

There's something endlessly fascinating about how people use clothes and accessories to express themselves. It's like each person carries a little story in the way they dress-whether it's a bold choice of footwear or the subtle addition of colour on a grey day. I love watching how the simplest outfits, sometimes so minimal, can suddenly become personal & unique, just with the right accessory or pop of colour.

Lately, I've been noticing this rich, deep cherry-red-almost maroon, popping up everywhere. It’s in scarves, bags, shoes and even coats, breathing life into the sea of neutrals that usually define fall fashion. And honestly, it’s such a welcome sight. There's something about this hue that feels both powerful and playful, injecting a sense of excitement into the calm, earthy tones of the season. It’s as if, through these pops of colour, people are refusing to let the colder months dull their creativity or spirit.

The other is Animal print-it’s a tricky one. There’s something bold and unapologetic about it, yet it can be hard to pull off. Parisians, however, have mastered the art of making it look effortless. Every time I walk the streets of Paris, I see someone pairing animal print with such ease and confidence and I’m left in awe.

As for me? I’ve tried and failed more times than I can count. No matter how many leopard print tops or zebra-striped scarves I add to my wardrobe, they just never seem to feel like me. I’ve come to accept that I’m more of a solid colours kind of girlie-simple, clean lines and a pop of red or blue here and there.

But that doesn’t mean animal print is off the table for everyone. If you're looking to dip your toes into the trend, I’ve learned that the key is to start with something that’s both versatile and impactful-like an animal print coat. It’s the perfect way to make a statement without feeling overwhelmed by the pattern. Paired with neutral tones, it becomes a chic and standout piece that can elevate any outfit.

So, while I may still be finding my way with animal print, I admire those who wear it fearlessly. After all, fashion is about experimenting, discovering and sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone-whether in a bold print or a bright colour.
